Tax Cap Confirmation

NYSUT CONFIRMS SSFC TAX CAP PREDICTION:

Prediction by Dr. Timbs from 2010 comes to fruition.

Newly released data from NYSUT have revealed that the increased financial and educational inequity resultant from the Tax Cap as forecasted by Dr. Rick Timbs of the Statewide Schools Finance Consortium back in 2010 have come true as predicted.

As reported in Rochester’s Democrat and Chronicle newspaper “In an affidavit filed in state Supreme Court, NYSUT contends the state’s tax cap exacerbates the funding inequality….The gap between the wealthier and poorer districts wasn’t just financial, according to the union.”

The NYSUT findings confirmed the predicted impact of the Tax Cap on the ability of poorer districts to provide programs and coursework needed to provide a meaningful and successful educational setting.  NYSUT findings include:

"The wealthiest 10 percent of New York school districts spent 80 percent more per student last year compared to the poorest 10 percent," according to the state’s largest teacher union as reported in the Rochester newspaper.
